RSPAN between 2950 and 3500

Hi!

I'm trying snif traffic on port 12 on my C2950 by setting up RSPAN and and send it to port 48 on my C3550. Those two switches are connected via a dot1q trunk.

And here are the configs:

On the 2950:

monitor session 1 source interface fastEthernet 0/12 both

monitor session 1 destination remote vlan 310 reflector-port fastEthernet 0/23

On the 3550:

monitor session 1 source remote vlan 310

monitor session 1 destination interface fastEthernet 0/48

VLAN 310 is created on a VTP server and exists in both switches.

But (as I'm sure you have guessed by now :) this does not work.

The sniffers i connect to port 48 on the C3550 does not recieve any traffic at all.

So.. any ideas? This should be possible right?

I got the setup from http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800c6f14.html

the document for the C3550 i pretty much the same, so I can't see any reason for this to work.

Thanks,

Hi,

Did you create VLAN 310 as an rspan VLAN?

vlan 310

remote-span

end

Also, i'd double check whether your dot1.q trunk is trunking 310

No, actually I did not create it as a rspan vlan?

So this must be done in the VTP server then?

Thank you, I'll try this right away :)

Hmm, I just realized that the VTP server is on a C3508G, and that command does not exist there.

So what are my options?

make the C2950 and the C3550 vtp transparent and create the vlan 310 manually... But then I get no more VTP updates from the server.. or?

Or I could move the VTP server to a device that supports this command, like the mentioned C3550.. that is probably the most permanent solution.

anything easier I haven't thougth of? :)

Thanks,

Hi,

Is the C3508G still available, perhaps you could check for a newer version of code with the rspan VLAN feature and upgrade the firmware.

This way you don't have to change your VTP structure

Thanks

Paddy

As far as I can see the C3508G is still available, but has no software that support RSPAN.
