Trouble with 3524 & 3560

I was asked to remove GigabitStack (Gbic) modules from the these switches and installed gigabit ethernet modules and we wanted to link them to the cisco 3750 which is the core switch which will also be clustered when the second switch is installed i.e. another cisco 3750.

Currently I cannot even get the modules to work with the cisco 3750 the links dont come up.

I have attached soem diagrams adn configs with this post if anyone can help will be greatly apprecaited.

If I need to run some debugging specific to any of the switches or upgrade IOS please feel free to let me know.

The other 3550 work absolutely fine with the cisco 3750.

I have also tried to swap the modules from teh working 3550 to non working 3524 and it still does not work.

Unless there is an obvious config issue.

cheers

Hi

We need few inputs like which GBIC modules you are trying to swap or install in the switches ?

Also did you find the compatibility of the GBIC modules in the respective switches ?

About the ios which is running in the boxes are they identical ?

It will be helpful you can also post out the error logs which can be taken out from the respective switches once you install the gbic.

regds

I am currently waiting for the part nos to be emailed to me from teh customer as I dont have it in hand but some more information is mentioned below.

The error logs is there a specific palce I need to look for them or should I enable some specific debugging ot retreive these logs?

The IOS on the 3524 are identical both are c3500XL-c3h2s-mz-120-5.3.WC.1.bin

Sh ver + sh flash of both 3524 are mentioned below...

but the 3560 is ofcourse different.

what i see in your configs so far:

all desktops (3550s) are using different IOS versions and capabilities.

desktop1 is using PVST and has no ip default gateway.

desktop2 has no g0/1 switchport mode defined.

desktop3 has no g0/1 switchport trunk mode defined although it does have dot1q encapsulation defined.

desktop4 is using RAPID-

PVST and has no ip default route defined.

desktop5 has no trunks defined.

3750 switch is using PVST, has no trunks defined and has no ip default route.

notes:

the ip default route should not be a factor, i just wanted to mention that some devices have it, some dont.

the spanningTree configuration should be similar across platforms. not PVST on one and RPVST on another, etc.

since you have such a broad range of IOS versions, minor Revs and capabilities, you may want to do what you can to get these all up to the same capabilities at least; better yet, the same version for all.

it may be wise to check your GBICs as well for faulty operation. (i've seen these go bad on a whim with just an removal/insert)

i cannot tell from your diagram which ports the desktops use to plug into the 3750 with and which ports in the 3750 they plug into. this will be important for troubleshooting so we know if you have a trunked port plugged into a non trunked port, etc.

please provide which ports the 3550s use to plug into which ports on the 3750; this will help us understand if any port configs are mismatching.

Wow that made a lot more sense and I am still letting it sink in.

For further updates on the earlier post is:

Desktop1

Desktop2

work absolutely fine with no issues at all....

To eliminate the modules if they were faulty we repalced those with the above mentioend switches even if I repalce the modules with the 2 * 3524 which dont work the modules work fine in desktop 1 + desktop2 so that eliminates the modules for certain.

As for the IOS is concerned do you think we must first upgrade them to a specific IOS if yes = which IOS would you recommend....

I will get the port details as soo as I can.

cheers

I hope this helps to further diagnose the problem.

The part nos are

3560 ? 30-1410-02

3500 ? OLD WS-X3500-XL

NEW 1000BASE-T GBIC WS-G5483

Further update on this query is:

The POE switch 3560 which was not workign according to my earlier statements seems to work now.

FIX:

1) Take the new Gigabit ethernet module out power off.

2) Power on

3) wait for it to settle down

4) Plug the module back in.

5) Power off

6) Power back on

this process was repeated approx 8 times and it has all come back to life with no configuration cahnge on either of the switches.

I had a chat with some friends and they have had simialr problems with these modules not sure if this is a known issue with Cisco.

But the problems with the 3524 still has not gone away
