Two IP addresses in same subnet on same router

I'm trying to connect a router with two LAN interfaces into a switch.

I'd like to know if it is possible to configure a router that has 2 LAN ETHERNET interfaces, with different IP addresses that are in the same subnet. e.g configure one interface with 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and the other interface 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0.

I've tried it and and i get an error message, effectively saying that you cannot do it. But i'm convinced that i put it into a 7204 and it accepted the command although the router gave up a warning message.

You cannot have overlapping subnets across interfaces on any router

We have done something similar using a BVI interface. The 2 router ethernet interfaces are bridged and the BVI interface has an IP address. This allow the router to be connected to 2 different switches via the same VLAN.
