Hi to one and all,

I have a small office network with 4 workstations Win_2000 and 1 Server NT4_SERVER. They access the Internet through a Cisco 837 A.D.S.L Router that sits on the network.1 static IP>>>>>83.71.*.*

The thing is i need to access my office P.C. from my home P.C. using remote software ie "V.N.C" or "P.C.Anywhere", My home computer uses XP pro, and i have internet access through an Netopia 3317 A.D.S.L. modem/router on dynamic IP.

How would i go about making such a connection from home.

The Cisco router pretty much has a default setup except for The one Wan IP and a Lan gateway IP i put on>>>>172.10.*.* and user/password, everything else is pretty much as it was as i configured it through the cwrs.

Thanks for any comments and ideas.

Markx.

you can use NAT/PAT.

Not sure how to go about that as i dont know much about NAT and never heard of PAT ;)

Then its a good idea you start reading up.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk361/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094831.shtml#examples

read on NAT overloading, which is PAT.

and read up on how to configure your 837

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps380/tsd_products_support_series_home.html

Basically your PC Anywhere or VNC controlled PC will be known as a "server", and if you have read the documentation in CRWS when you are configuring NAT, you would have known what to do.

don't be lazy. enough of spoon feeding.

Look, thanks for your comments and the links.

However I reject your preconceptions about spoon feeding etc. I don’t want to become a Cisco specialist. I am a business man, but I also understand it’s not rocket science either... which is why i set it up myself in the first place. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel here, I simply thought that maybe another member may have a sample of a config file, that maybe someone had already done this, and yes that I wouldn’t have to read a book to complete what’s possibly a 3min task, which I will probably never need to do again for goodness sake

I could answer all questions in this forum by posting links to manuals and books, and throwing around phrases like NAT which alone is at least a couple of volumes of reading.

Bottom line for you friend" if you don’t know how it works just say so and then post a link to a manual!!

I have seen lots of examples on the forum of posted configs what they are and what they should be given an individuals scenario.

It’s all I was looking for...............

PS: and heres a quote from yourself posted only a few days ago..

http://forums.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Dpass_through%26location%3Doutline%40%5E1%40.1dd7f0a7

"Any help is appreciated. "And sorry for the need of you spoon feeding me", but I seriously would like to learn and the information I see on the web is overwehlming"....

lol; In Ireland we would say>>>>You have some Neck<<<<

yup, it definately is true that I was requesting for help, but I have already tried things out many many times, and in the end, its just one single line in my config that is causing the problem. Whereas you simply do not want to read up on what is happening.

I am no CISCO expert as well, all the config you see in my other posts are done with the help of CRWS. And that is by reading the comments in when I click on some links within the CRWS (with the exception of DMZ and QoS), and its a job that is less than 10 mins!

And for your kind problem with the 837, I already have told you what to do in my previous post. Read carefully.

In my home town, we would simply say: >>pu bor<<

"QUOTE"

"yup, it definately is true that I was requesting for help"

Look hang,

NO! YOU WERE REQUESTING TO BE "SPOON FED" BECAUSE YOU COULDNT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU WERE READING. and that was only the day before i posted.

So to post me in the way you did was an insult, in a word, YOU MY FRIEND HAVE BEEN WEIGHED ON THE SCALES AND FOUND WANTING. And i belive that any Cisco specialist reading your posts to me would be affronted, that you would take upon yourself to instruct me in the way you did. You are way out of your leauge........

With due respect, I have read the manual. If I could have worked it out by reading a few more pages do you think I would have spent my time joining this forum and requesting help? BTW I tried many different configuration changes including the changes other members gave you and that was before I posted, which means I done more reading than you before posting!! You assume too much!!

Bottom line here, you haven’t even sorted it for yourself. So to post me a message like this. "You can use NAT/PAT." is an insult to yourself as its obvious you don’t know what you’re talking about and should never have posted to my request in the first place. Leave it for folks who know!!

Can someone with the proper understanding please advise.

Many Thanks.

well, at least I am bothered to give more information and even the configuration that I have done for people to troubleshoot and test things out as much as possible.

And with me requesting to spoon feed, its to troubleshoot my config, not asking people to give me a working onfig without any work in the first place.

And if you seriously have read and tried, I do not see why you have no idea what is PAT... and you should mention what are that things you have done in the first place, or you give others the impression that you have not done anything, telling you what to do, and then you saying that it did not work previously, wasting people's time.

FYI, changes others gave me is for VPN, nothing to do with NAT or help you out at all. You are looking at the wrong places.

if you ever want help, give more information, else simple answer is all you are going to get as well.

My try to help you by telling you that you need to NAT overload and that the PC you are going to try to control will be known as the server. And that is more than enough for configuring NAT in CRWS, which is a standard feature in 837.

If that does not help you and you have tried that before hand, let people know, else, you will get the same reply.

If I do not know what am I doing, you think I can come out with the type of configuration you see in the other post that you mentioned? Maybe you should not even be using a CISCO in the first place, or pay someone else to do the technical support, since you do not have the time to learn.

look mate i wont even dignify those excuses with an answer. Suffice to say "You were caught out big time with that first post to me. Now stop embrassing yourself, get an attitude adjustment and move on!!

Good luck....

-----------------------------------------------

F.A.O. Real Cisco engineers, i will post my current config and the default config as it was. I know i am just a hairs breath from getting this running.

Thanks.

look too, those are absolutely not excuses as those are facts which others can see from reading through my posts in this thread.

By what you are doing now, following my advice on posting more information, its more like you know the faults but unwilling to say so...

Looking at the way you post in other sections on the same issue and no one bothers to help, its says as much....

and seriously, good luck... I will not bother on this thread anymore.

For your info, you can find the solution to your problem in my configuration I posted in the other thread that you mentioned. But I will not bothered to tell you where since you have a real attitude problem.

Tok Kok Sai Yang

Hello,

I was just doing a search and came across this post. Did you ever get this resolved ?

To be honest, I think it is rather embarrassing to get responses like the one you did. You posted a problem and gave lots of details, absolutely nothing wrong with that. I am a frequent participant in this forum, and I can tell you that the large majority of people posting and replying has only one goal: to help, and to get problems solved.

Every once in a while, you will come across somebody who gives answers like the ones you got, but that is totally not representative for this forum. I have been in networking for about 10 years, and I still think that I do not know much. I have also met many many many networking people, and I can tell you that somebody really knowledgeable, somebody with really a lot of experience, would NEVER give you an answer like this. I can give you countless examples, but this one thing always holds true: if you have extensive knowledge, you are humble, if you have little to none, you behave like the person you got these responses from.

I guess my point is: keep posting here, this is one of the best places to look for help. I am sure there are specific words in Ireland for specific people, but maybe we should take this part of the discussion offline...:)

Regards,

Georg Pauwen

Hello Georg,

Thanks for all your comments, I agree 100% with all you said. Thank you i did get my config sorted out with no help from whatever his name was!! Yes great site, i was Unfortunate to recieve the response i got, and equally foolish to get into words with someone with no understanding of the problem. Wasted my time. But hey thanks for the encourgment. ;)
