Best tech to forward group addrs end-to-end and ease of implementation
Sorry for the very open question.
I'm trying to identify the best SP technology in order to achieve the following requirements for the overlay:
- 1) trasparent forwarding of all the frames (even link-local whose dst addr is 01:80:C2:00:00:0X - CDP - LLDP - MKA/EAPoL);
- 2) dual-home capabilities;
- 3) ease of implementation (from MAC learning pov).
I'm new to SP technologies and I was attracted by EVPN BGP but it seems the implementation on Catalysts fails on 1). Then I had a look at VPLS (I would not be able to say whether in combination with LDP or BGP) and in the commands I can explicitly say which dst MAC addrs I want to be carried over. I'm going around in a sort of a loop where some technologies satisfy some requirements (EVPN BGP for 2 and 3) whereas others satisfy others (VPLS 1 and 2).
Moreover for the choice of the HW it seems that 1) is satisfied by the xconnect technology that is available on Nexus but not on Catalysts.

loadbalancing is one of the more complex items in hardware forwarding. of course we have talked about it many years on cisco live (id 2904) with ever incrementing more detail. and there is the support forum article on loadbalancing.
