I was intrigued by this blog post discussing creative remote control uses for SMS:
Remotely controlled irrigation systems in India
Saunabath heating systems in FInland have been SMS controlled for 10 years
Airline check-in (offered by Finnair in 2001)
Control street lights in Germany (save energy on sparsely used streets - residents enable the lights when needed)
Vote in national elections by SMS (Estonia will offer this in 2010)
With SMS being the most widely used data application, having 3x more Internet connections than personal computers, why isn't it used more for these types of activities?
Personally I'd like to see a service which would reduce the time I spend standing in line. I'd call it Remote Presence. On the way to an appointment, I'd text the person at the check-in desk that I'm "here" and get a virtual ticket number in response. When I arrive I text a reply and walk up to the counter thereby bumping everyone else in line (note the air of superiority in my voice ).
