Current status of SDN/NFV deployments

Hi all,

Given the increasing trend of automation and virtualization, can someone please share what is the current status of NFV/SDN deployments around the world in SPs/DCs/Enterprises ?

Any customers who have actually started to implement automation/virtualization in their current networks ?

No need to share customer details but I just want to know whether this SDN/NFV is actually real or just a hype restricted to labs & POCs ?

Thanks in advance.

First of all let’s get the nomenclature out of the way.

SDN -can mean:

a) logically centralized control plane programming FIBs on decentralized data-plane

b) abstraction layers between “what to do” and “how to actually do it”

The a) part

Is used by for example Google and Facebook -in the network wide sense but may other shops as well.

It’s also very much part of any SD-WAN “black-box” solution out there.

The b) part,

While used by all folks that use the a) part,

Is also used by may automation solutions used all the way down from the biggest SPs like AT&T (ONAP) all the way down to local/regional SPs.

NVF – it’s just virtualization

And, at some level, it’s used by everybody in the industry.

It’s all about the competitive edge,

Getting new services out of the door quicker (model based service development, testing and assurance) and provide customers with self-service portals to make any tweaks to these services any time they like…

Thanks for sharing that perspective
