Can 2 Aironet 1042's use WDS without a controller?

I have received many conflicting answers to this question.  I'm hoping to get a decisive answer here.

Can 2 Aironet 1042's using WDS handoff a session between them without any other network hardware needed?

As long as they are autonomous and not lightweight. it's only required for EAP type authentication.
