This question is asked very often in this forum and then answer never changes:  Regardless of what band or protocol, Cisco's rule of thumb is 25 wireless clients per AP.

This number can go up and down depending on the TYPE OF TRAFFIC.  For example, if the wireless clients' traffic are HTTP/HTTPS, IM, e-mails then you can potentially see the number go up to 35 wireless clients.  However, if the traffic are HD videos then expect the numbers to drop to around 8 wireless clients per AP.

Now that's on the AP-side.  Your LAN and WAN should be able to cope with this kind of traffic.  It's no use if you're using a state-of-the-art AP and the uplink from the AP to the switch is 100 Mbps.

Leo Laohoo,

"It's no use if you're using a state-of-the-art AP...." - can you explain what is it?

can you explain what is it?

What I mean is:  It's no use if you've got a fleet of 3700 or 3800 AP if your LAN is only 100 Mbps-capable.  At the end of the day, this will be your bottleneck.

This is why Cisco is strongly selling mGIG as a leverage to 802.11ac Wave 2.
