Cisco AIR-AP1832i

I have an 1832i that I'd like to use on a WLC 5508. Is this possible? Do I need to change the IOS on the AP or is already provisioned to use either a WLC or the Mobility Express?

yes it is possible..

Run "show version" on CLI

If the show version CLI displays AP Image Type: MOBILITY EXPRESS IMAGE and AP Configuration: MOBILITY EXPRESS CAPABLE, it operates both as Controller and an Access Point. It participates in the Master Election process in case of a failover.

cisco AI R-AP1852E-UXK9 ARMv7 Processor rev 0 (v71) with 997184/525160K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID RFDP2BCR021
AP Running Image : 8.1.121.0
Primary Boot Image : 8.1.121.0
Backup Boot Image : 8.1.106.33
AP Image type : MOBILITY EXPRESS IMAGE
AP Configuration : MOBILITY EXPRESS CAPABLE
0 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
0 802.11 Radios
Radio FW version . 1401b63d12113073a3C08aa67f0c039c0
NSS FW version : NSS.AK.1.0.c4-0Z026-E_cust C-1.24160.1

If the show version CLI shows AP Image Type: MOBILITY EXPRESS IMAGE and AP Configuration: NOT MOBILITY EXPRESS CAPABLE, it operates only as access point and does not participate in the Master Election process in case of a failover.

So based on your response and the output of the AP it looks like I can use it on a WLC 5508. Does it operate the same as the older models where it does a broadcast capwapp looking for a controller?

NSS FW version : NSS.AK.1.0.c10-00017-E_custC-1.67978.1

you stated that if the show version shows this:

AP Image type : MOBILITY EXPRESS IMAGE
AP Configuration : MOBILITY EXPRESS CAPABLE

then I do not have to convert the image.

I'm confused.

I made a mistake in my first post.

Currently your 1832I running in mobility Express mode. 1832I wont join 5508 when it runs in Mobility Express mode.

If you want the AP1832 to join 5508, then you have to convert it to Capwap mode.

Follow below link and convert your 1832I to Capwap:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-2/b_Mobility_Express_Deployment_guide/b_Mobility_Express_Deployment_guide_chapter_01100.html#task_CD04E8319602439D973B7D7ACE23111D

seems to be doing the broadcast now. I'll try on the network.

[*07/11/2017 00:10:39.9091] CAPWAP State: Discovery
[*07/11/2017 00:11:09.9397] Discovery Request sent to 255.255.255.255, discovery type UNKNOWN(0)

Cool .. It should join the 5508..

Let us know how it goes.

Post the complete output to the following commands:

1.  WLC:  sh sysinfo;

2.  WLC:  sh time;

3.  AP:  sh version; and

4.  AP:  sh ip interface brief

Is DHCP Option 43 enabled?
