Multiple Client Deauthentication & Association Issues

Hello all.

I've been experiencing a problem at a customer's site in which all the wireless devices at some point or another appear to have connectivity problems.  I am using a single, centrally-located AIR-AP1041N-A-K9 access point.  There are about six (6) client devices connecting to the AP that are using either Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 Pro.  I am constantly receiving logs similar to the following for these clients:

As a result, clients occasionally lose connectivity and the locally-hosted application crashes on their laptops (eClinicalWorks is the application they are using).  I have tried changing the channel from 1 to 6 but this didn't resolve issues.  I also borrowed and ran a spectrum analyzer at the location but I couldn't find any intereference devices.  I have made sure that drivers on the laptops are updated. 

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I've had similar issues in the past. My problem was specific to interference. It sounds like you did a sweep. Did you do the sweep at the same time a device had this behavior. Are all the devices or some of the devices behaving like this at the same time ?

Multiple Client Deauthentication & Association Issues

I used AirMagnet Spectrum Analyzer to perform a sweep of the facility.  The only intereferer that I could find was the Microwave Oven(s) when they were running.  Unfortunately, I only did the one sweep and I did not do it while they were experiencing issues.  Furthermore, I no longer have the tool available as I was borrowing it. 

Some devices seem to have more problems that others.  I had one computer in particular that was dropping off the network very badly.  I found that the drivers were up-to-date and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless NIC.  I also tried turning off all other startup and services that weren't necessary.  These methods did not improve problem.  Is there a free tool available to determine if there is a wireless intereference issue happening at the site?

* Do you have proper cell sizing ? Your clients aren't dropping because lack of signal ?

* Are you doing 802.11n at 40 Mhz channels ?

* Can you post an example of your config ?

I've heard of that tool before but I've never personally used it.  I will look into it.

* Do you have proper cell sizing ? Your clients aren't dropping because lack of signal ?

The single AP is supporting a building that is 50 ft x 75 ft.  The building is partitioned rooms (doctor's practice).  I did a quick survey before installing the AP and I found the weakest areas had a signal of -65dB.  When I've looked at the connected clients on the AP, I have seen their signals range from -44dB to -70dB.  It doesn't seem to make a difference on the signal level as the clients drop off the network regardless.

* What clients, nic models and driver ar you using ?

The XP Pro client machines are using Intel WiFi Link 5100AGN adapters.  The drivers are from 2008/12/22 (12.4.0.21).

The 7 Pro client machines are using ThinkPad 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter.  The drivers are from 2012/05/13 (these are the latest drivers available 1005.32.306.2012).  These machines seem to have the most connection problems.

* Are you doing 802.11n at 40 Mhz channels ?

This AP only supports 2.4GHz frequency.  I can only set the channel at 20MHz.

* Can you post an example of your config ?

I would suggest adjusting your basic data rate to something other than 1Mbps, perhaps 11Mbps, or a non DSSS/HR-DSSS rate like 6, 9, or 12 (if you want to prevent 802.11b clients).  This is probably not contributing to the behavior you're experiencing, but that's a very slow data rate to be mandatory and used for all management/control traffic and is wasteful of the airtime.

Also, be careful when posting your configs.   You did remove the local credentials, but you have essentially put the PSK of your customer's WLAN out for anyone to decrypt very easily.

As far as the interference and client behavior, can you post the output of your radio interface?
