Remote Site Having Wifi Slowness

Patrick McHenry
Level 3
Level 3

Very vague issue I know.

From what I have gathered so far, download speeds on the wifi are fine at times and sporadically slow at 4Mbps downloads on a 100Mbps circuit. I do see some drops on the Internet circuit connecting interface, but not a very high amount.

I am looking at all angles - not just wifi...Internet facing interface on firewall for speed and duplex, but I am thinking this is a wifi issue as we are not experiencing the same slowness on the wired. Also, these people are stationary so likely not a roaming issue.

At the remote site we are using 37021 APs using FlexconnectAP mode. Internet traffic is directed to the local Internet circuit..as previously mentioned 100Mbps.

There should not be any issues with contention as there are only 5 people at the site - going to be many more in the future.

And the is plenty of AP coverage

Because this is in an urban environment, I'm am first thinking this could be an interference issue.

I admit that I am trying to take the easy way out of this issue and trying to find a smoking gun, but isnt there a configuration on the AP that fixes interference in an Urban environment with many wireless signals?

If not, where should I start? Wireshark, Controller logs, switch logs. I will paste any and all

Thank you

I would suggest below

1. Using a wired PC (on the same vlan wireless users use) test the performance over 1 hr period and see bench mark speeds you get.

2. Do a comparison test with a wireless user

3. If you see considerable performance drop, first check the configuration and make sure WPA2-AES  with WMM enabled on WLAN. Also check "show client detail <mac_addr>" output to confirm RSSI & SNR of the clients. Also check the wireless client capability (spatial streams,802.11n/ac, etc)

4. All values in number 3 indicate client should get higher througput, try to go with different version of software code and see.

Thanks Rasika for your response.

Could you explain what you mean by "all values in number 3"?

I cannot find the setting for "WMM" under the WLAN...

Also, do you think we should enable "Avoid Persistent Non-WiFi Interference" under wireless

Thank you, Pat.

Post "show client <mac_addr>" output for your wireless client when it experience this slowness.

Also post "show wlan <wlan_id>" to see how you configure the SSID for this.

To see software version "show sysinfo" output would be useful as well.

Thanks Rasika

I will be sure to post the "show client" when the user is experiencing issues.

Could you please answer the questions below when you have a moment?

Thank you

I cannot find the setting for "WMM" under the WLAN...

WLAN > QoS > WMM Policy [ you can have either required or allowed ]

do you think we should enable "Avoid Persistent Non-WiFi Interference" under wireless

If you have enabled EDRRM, then it is good to tick that box, so if AP detect some non-wifi interference on particular channel, then AP will change its channel to avoid that interference.

I attached a link test from the Controller to the client as well...seems to be alot of Transmit Replies at AP everytime I run the test.

Also, I would like to mention that we are using a mix of 3702I-A-K9 and B-K9 APs. I've read that it shouldn't cause any issues, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Thx, Pat

Regarding WLC config, I noticed it is configured for multiple country codes that belong to different regulatory domain. This will restrict AP power level & channels to a lowest common value in these regulatory domain. This is not recommended and you may experience unwanted results.

Configured Country............................... Multiple Countries : CA,DE,FR,GB,IE,IN,US

Also noticed you are running latest 8.3.x code which is less than 6 months old. Always be aware of known issues in such a latest code. Below link may useful to find any known issues
