Site Surveying with a 1852i and 1852e

Do i just assign a Management IP address through the setup wizard, create an SSID, then turn up my radios and transmit power in order to configure an 1852 for a pre-deployment AP on a stick site survey? 

I assume since there is no autonomous code for the 1852's, that I will use the Mobility Express image on the AP?

I never tried to be honest. It i heard from an engineer that you can set the default gateway for the AP as Controller IP on the CLI to force the AP to be stable up. He things he can reach his controller and stays up. Otherwise he will be forced to the searching process of a wlc. So pre config it and change the wlc IP as mentioned. Hopefully that helps.  It your idea could work as well I guess
