WLC 2504 + AP1542

Dmitry Klimenko

Faced the problem of network operation with various model access points.

We have:

1. WLC 2504 with firmware 8.0

2. Work network with AP1242

3. We purchased additional AP1542

Problem: the controller sees them, but the AP does not pass the join. In principle, it is decided to update the software to version 8.5. BUT! The entire network on the AP1242 falls off. Joining old access points fails (looks like cyclic attempts to connect).

Judging by the information

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html#pgfId-344191

everything is bad, old access points are not supported by the new WLC firmware. But perhaps not so understood?

Questions:

1. Is it really possible to make them work together?

2. Is it possible to configure a standalone version on the AP1542?

The 1240 series AP were last supported on 8.0.x version where as the 1542 requires 8.5.x therefore they can not be on the same controller.

The best way to do this would be two separate controllers, or upgrade the 1240 series APs.

Hi,

1. Is it really possible to make them work together?

NO way. 1242 last support is 8.0.X and 1542 first support is 8.5.103.0 version.

2. Is it possible to configure a standalone version on the AP1542?

yes they can work. Download Mobility express image for these APs.

Load the 1542 with Mobility Express.

Hasn't the time come to replace these old EOL a/b/g APs?

Thanks for answers!
Old AP does not make sense to replace, everything works fine and high speeds are not required.
Mobility Express unfortunately download will not work - there is no service contract.

Then you need a service contract for at least one AP1542 (in case you have several). Then you can download the mobility express image and create a second, standalone wireless network. Please note, Mobility Express is also a wireless controller, which needs its own VLAN, separated from your old wireless infrastructure, to operate.

Send an email to TAC with ALL the serial numbers of the 1542.  Let the Entitlements Team decide if TAC can publish the firmware or not.
