Hey there. I am looking for a handheld device that would allow us to align the IP cameras when we install them. I know Pelco makes one (part# IPS-RMK) but I do not think it will work with a POE device. Any thoughts?

I have forwared your request to a larger audience in Cisco.

Are you looking for a device to plug directly into the camera body?
If so:
1. You can use the BNC port in the back of the camera to view video. The image is not production quality, but good enough for aiming the camera
2. plug directly into the camera while powering it from a power supply.
I recommend using any handheld TV or hand held device that accepts COAX (with a Coax tip or BNC tip).

Hi
There are two ways to do this.
1. Use a temp wireless AP and wireless laptop to focus/tune the cameras, when your done take away the AP.
2. Invest in a product called PinPoint which is manufactured by a company called Veracity. Point Point allows you to easily set up and focus Power over Ethernet (POE) enabled cameras. No temporary local power source for the camera is required, as PINPOINT enables the camera to draw its power from the installed POE network cabling, whilst re-directing the actual Ethernet network connection to a local laptop, netbook or even PDA

Hi!
I realize this might not be an option for everyone, but I actually use my jailbroken iPhone for aligning cams. I also use it to demo some cameras while on the road via Wifi, 3G, or even... Edge *shudder*.
BTW, I've just discovered this forum, and I'm likely to start frequenting it.... often.
Cheers!
Scott Olsen.

We decided to go with the Arm Electronics 4SMKIT. I also recently found this online
The PINPOINT is about 40 bucks.

Great info. Thanks. I was under the impression that Cisco made a device for this. Is that not true? When the contractor installed the 250 cameras we have back in 2009 or 2010, they told us about a device Cisco had that straped to your wrist and helped during setup of IP cameras. I can't seem to find it now on Cisco or any other site. I am trying the free "iCam viewer" for my iPhone now and will let you know what I think later today.
Thanks

We've actually purchased some Axis installation monitors (http://www.axis.com/products/cam_t8414/index.htm) in absense of a tool from Cisco. Keep in mind that while this device can actually provide PoE to power an endpoint during installation and "setting the shot", I haven't come up with a method to actually access the video stream via IP, it's all been analogue. We just keep this in mind and get the appropriate AV-Cable for any Cisco HD cams we commission.
Cheers!

Hey Scott, let me know which PTZ protocols it supports okay? (Note: Make yourself a 12VDC battery hookup for the greater than 6W cameras you want on PoE, it also extends the time in field to more than ~2hours.)
