login local vs aaa login local

Hi,

this is a seemingly trivial question, but I'd just like to put it by everyone since sometimes we miss some detail in what initially looks obvious :)

I have aaa setup with a tacacs server for authentication and accounting and all works great

For the console I would like to setup such that Im always authenticated locally.

What, if any, is the difference between the below two pieces of config to achieve this ?

Of course in both cases i have a username and password configured in the global config

#1

aaa authentication login notacacs local

line con 0
 login authentication notacacs

#2

line con 0
 login local

thanks

Mark

Hi Mark ,

With the first configuration you have the option to specify a AAA server for the authentication and the local database as the fallback method.

With the second option  only the local database will be used for authentication.

Hope it helps
