1841 PPPOE - Static ip configuration issues - No Connectivity to ISP

Melvinb1981

Good Day,

Hoping for assistance,

I have a Cisco 1841 Router that i want to connect up to my ISP modem. (They requested my Mac Address of the original Router Not Cisco - I have however cloned the Mac Address to my Cisco router trying to rule that out as an issue - Wanting to use this instead of the ISP provided router.)

I have also tried using both chap and pap , running debug commands this should allow some sort of indication if its an authentication issue but no display of errors.

I have not configured any nat configurations as of yet im literally trying to ping any address within the console port

What has been provided from the ISP side is the following:

  • Static IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Gateway
  • DNS Settings
  • PPPOE Username & Password

Hello,

Below is default and i manually changed the config to full duplex as well still no joy. I believe it might be and issue from the isp side im not certain what other tests i can do i have copied the running config again at the bottom in can i missed something, thanks for the assistance and patience.

Show with hard coded speed/duplex setting the line protocol comes up - however than you post the run config and the same interface is admin shutdown!!

Hi ,

Sorry was shutting the port down then up again for testing and copied over the code before i brought it back up. Still however the same.

No pppoe session still. Im thinking an issue from the isp side still.

There should be some sort debug packet information or something in display for pppoe session however and its not generating anything

What type/make/model is the ISP modem you are trying to replace with the 1841 ?

The device you have swapped out is it a  Calix manufacturer?

If it is then this kind of device suggests its an optical network terminal /router gateway combination and if so then you wont be able to swap it out due to the in built ONT transceiver.

So at best I think you need to bridge the device but then will it allow you to do so?
I do see some ppoe credentials you have been trying to use however have these been confirmed by yourr ISP or have you just taken them off the other device as you may be missing something?

At this time if the above is correct its looking like your only option i can see is to only double nat your Cisco router behind this "calix ont/gateway router"

Yee correct its a calix

So then it is very possible your only option is to double nat your cisco behind this calix device

Which Calix model (e.g. the C844G) ?

844e-2

Hello,

if you look at the drawing on page 5 of the attached guide, what port are you connecting the WAN cable to ?

And how did you clone the MAC address ? The problem is that the 1841 router interface has a burned-in address (BIA), that might be the problem. I don't think you can actually clone the BIA.

https://www.mypremieronline.com/assets/documents/giga-center-quick-start-guide.pdf

@Georg Pauwen  Every interface had a BIA

the OP as taken that MAC address from the Cali  and appended to the gig interface of the Cisco router  “cloned” it so to speak

What I am after is if the ISP might have implemented measures to prevent ARP spoofing and MAC address cloning. I know that some ISPs, in addition to registering the MAC address of a device, also use data/frame sequence numbering, or OS fingerprinting. So simply cloning the MAC address of the interface (with the mac-address H.H.H interface command) might not work.

I would first check with the ISP if what the user wants to do is even allowed, and hence, possible.

Hello

tbh - I doubt any isp or manufacturer will officially allow their own devices to be cloned - however it does happen and some cases it works other times it doesn’t but getting back to the OP  even if this is allowed looking at those calix devices on their web site they are mostly ONT/gateways so my understanding you still won’t be able to use that Cisco box without that calix also being connected and then to use the Cisco box as a primary gateway the calix box needs to be bridged which again it doesn’t seem you can do and if it does let’s you then you need the correct ppoe creds off the isp

however I could be totally wrong here as I am only going by what I have read regard these calix devices.

Hi,

The top box in the pic is the ont box where the fibre goes into. It then
runs the rj45 cable to the calix box.

I would call the ISP and ask them for assistance. If they block anything, they'll probably tell you right away...
