6509 with Sup 720 configuration upgrade

hustler0002

Hi,

I currently have this in our Sup720:

boot system flash bootflash:s72033-jk9o3sv-mz.122-17a.SX3.bin

boot bootldr sup-bootflash:s72033-psv-mz.122-17a.SX1.bin

I downloaded s72033-mp001-pz.122-33.SXH5

I read the documentation on Upgrading Software Images on Catalyst 6000/6500 Series Switches

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080116ff0.shtml

I was wondering do I copy the s72033-mp001-pz.122-33.SXH5 to the sup-bootflash and bootflash?  In the example it also uses disk0: but I get a <No device available>. Also keep in mind we're upgrading the application and maintanence partitions also. So this is a big upgrade and I've never done this before.

I guess the 2 things I want to know is:

1) Can I copy the s72033-mp001-pz.122-33.SXH5 to both the sup-bootflash and the bootflash?  Can I run it just copying it to the sup-bootflash?

2) It was my understanding that I only needed one image file for the upgrade but the documentation says I need

    "a. the main software image

     b. the bootloader image"

Do I need another file?  I'm a little confused.  I did notice the files had different names and sizes and so do the ones on my current Sup 720.

And we are doing this tomorrow and I just happened to be reviewing the documentation one more time and somehow missed this. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

Mike

You have the wrong file and not enough flash space. The file you need should be similar to the following:

IOS image for SUP720 MSFC3 - s72033-adventerprisek9_wan-mz.122-33.SXH8.bin

IOS Bootloader - s72033-boot-mz.122-33.SXH8.bin

ROMMON for 6700 series line cards - c2lc-rm2.srec.122-18r.S1

FPD upgrade - c6500-fpd-pkg.122-33.SXH8.pkg

From your other post, you don't have enough space in sup-bootflash:. The easiest way to do is put a 512MB CF card into disk0:.

Here is the instruction to upgrade the IOS

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_example09186a0080116ff0.shtml#sup720

Here is the instruction on the 6700 series LC ROMMON upgrade

Can you post output of show mod? The image you've downloaded s72033-mp001-pz.122-33.SXH5 is a L2 only image. Just want to make sure this is what you want.

jerry

HTH,

jerry

Jerry thanks for quick reply.

I had a question about the FPD upgrade file. What is it for? I did find the documentation

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/7200/configuration/feature_guides/fpd.html#wp1085780

Is there a specific order in upgrading?  I need to upgrade basically everything.

Here's what I know.

1. Upgrade the application partition from 1.1(3) to 2.3(5)

2. Upgrade the maintenance partition to 2.1(2) or higher

3. Upgrade the supervisor to 12.2(18)SXF2 or higher

4. Upgrade the application partition from 2.3(5) to 4.x

When do I upgrade the FPD?

TIA

Do you have a CF card in the slot of your Sup720?  This is where you should store the IOS image, as the bootflash may not be large enough to hold the newer IOS images (or not big enough to hold two of them).  You will want to check your filesystems to see if you have a CF card, and if not, if you have enough free space in your bootflash for the new image.

In privileged mode, issue a "dir all-filesystems".  Depending on model of sup720, you should look for disk0:, slot0:, or sup-bootdisk:.

If none of these exist, then check the amount of free space in bootflash:.  If you have enough free space in your bootflash: you can copy the new image there, and then just change your configured boot variable to point to the new image.  Reload, and you should come up on the new image.

Looking at release notes for 12.2(33)SXH series, I see a lot of requirements for a minimum ROMMON version of 12.2(18r)S1... I would check the ROMMON version on your sup720 (show ver | inc ROM) and look at the release notes: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/ios/12.2SX/release/notes/ol_14271.html to see if you need to upgrade your ROMMON to support 12.2(33)SXH5.

Hope this helps,

Matt

This is what I get from a dir.  It looks like I have an older version of the ROMMON.  Can you tell me the file name I need to upgrade the ROMMON to? Is it

c2lc-rm2.srec.122-18r.S1

or

c6msfc3-rm2.srec.122-17r.SX7

I didn't see it in the upgrading the SUP720 documentation.  Also I don't think we have a CF card in the slot. Disk0 and Disk1 dir give a .

The version we have is 12.2(14r)s9 but I can't find the file anywhere.  Is the file usually saved somewhere like in the bootflash or can you delete it after it's been upgraded?

Hi Mike,

After double checking the documentation, none of your modules need FPD upgrade. It is for SIP SPA and SCC modules.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/shared_port_adapters/install_upgrade/6500series/6500trbl.html

HTH,

jerry

Thanks again for your help.  So I guess I need to get those 3 files from above and a 512 MB CF card to upgrade the SUP720. I'll do a little more reading and post if I have any more question.

Mike
