802.1q router

Hi, I would need to buy a router which supports 802.1q sub-interfaces. This would be a router for an ethernet connection, so I would not need any DSL or other WAN connections capability.

Which platform and license would you recommend me?

It would be for a medium organization.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Depending on what else you need the router to be able to do, pretty much all Cisco routers support 802.1Q subinterfaces.

You said a medium organisation though, so I'd say any of the 2800-series (2801, 2811, 2821, 2851), or at most, the 3825. Which one you choose depends how much traffic you expect this router to experience, and what other features you require.

It also won't matter what IOS feature set you use, unless you have a specific requirement (VPN, VoIP, etc), as 802.1Q is supported in IP Base images.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards

Graeme

Hi Graeme,

I only need that this router makes routing. No QoS, VPN, etc.

Do you think that a 1800 series would be insufficient to make it?

Hi there,

An 1800 would work as well, but it depends how much traffic you're going to throw at it.

Kind regards,

Graeme
