Is it possible to disable the onboard RAM and just use the add on RAM?

I don't blieve that that is a possiblity, if you are positive that the onboard memory is the problem you might want to consider a second hand router as 1601r do not cost that mutch.

If you add a DRAM SIMM (say 16MB for example) with parity, the 8MB of onboard no-parity DRAM will be disabled and the router has a total useable memory of 16MB. On the other hand, if you use a 16MB DRAM SIMM with no parity, then the 8MB onboard is added to this 16MB for a total useable memory of 24MB.
Hope this helps.
