I'm working on adding the maximum-prefix feature on two of our routers, a 3945 running 15.7(3)M6 and a 4431 running 16.12.04. I'm following the BGP configuration guides for both models, but I've found that the command isn't available.
Here's the generic configuration from both routers:
#sho run | s bgp
router bgp xxxxxx
bgp log-neighbor-changes
neighbor 2001:xxx remote-as xxx
neighbor 2001:xxxx password 7 //hash
neighbor 140.x.x.x.x remote-as 333
neighbor 140.x.x.x password 7 //hash
!
address-family ipv4
no neighbor 2001:xxx activate
neighbor 140.x.x.x activate
exit-address-family
!
address-family ipv6
neighbor xxx activate
exit-address-family
And here's what I see when I try to configure maximum prefixes:
(config-router)#neighbor 140.x.x.x ?
cluster-id Configure Route-Reflector Cluster-id (peers may
reset)
description Neighbor specific description
disable-connected-check one-hop away EBGP peer using loopback address
ebgp-multihop Allow EBGP neighbors not on directly connected
networks
fall-over session fall on peer route lost
ha-mode high availability mode
inherit Inherit a template
local-as Specify a local-as number
log-neighbor-changes Log neighbor up/down and reset reason
password Set a password
path-attribute BGP optional attribute filtering
peer-group Member of the peer-group
remote-as Specify a BGP neighbor
shutdown Administratively shut down this neighbor
timers BGP per neighbor timers
transport Transport options
ttl-security BGP ttl security check
update-source Source of routing updates
version Set the BGP version to match a neighbor
Any ideas why the command isn't available?

As you are using ipv4 address family, maximum-prefix for neighbor 140.x.x.x will need to be enabled as follows:
router bgp xxxxxx
!
address-family ipv4
neighbor 140.x.x.x maximum-prefix
