Default routes

Hi There,

I have a question and here is the senario:

Two directly attached routers with default routes pointing to each other.

A packet receive with destination IP address which do not match any route in the first routers routing table so obviously the packet gets forwarded to router 2, now what will happen if there is no route for the destination in routing table of router 2?

I was wondering if routers advertise their default routes to neighbor routers or this will cause loop?

Hello Vachik:

Since the default routes were configured locally on both routers they will be advertised.

This will result in a loop situation as you mentioned.

The packet will be bounced between both routers until the TTL field in the IP header expires. At this point the packet will be dropped.

Cheers,
