DMVPN as backup; detect link failure

DMVPN does not support keepalives as we all know.

is there a way to determine if a DMVPN tunnel cannot reach its head-end anymore?

Scenario: Site has mpls primary link and thus is reachable. The backup link is current GRE/IPSEC and you can use SNMP to determine if the point-to-point tunnel is up by use of keepalive.

In DMVPN tunnel is there anyway to determine via SNMP if the tunnel is functioning? we use BGP to route across this environment.

thanks,

tim

Hello Tim,

>> In DMVPN tunnel is there anyway to determine via SNMP if the tunnel is functioning? we use BGP to route across this environment.

BGP session on the DMVPN will fail when the tunnel is not operational.

use smaller timers then default for the BGP sessions.

using DMVPN with a dynamic routing protocol provides you an efficient way to check what is happening.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
