hi,
i'm configuring a 4431 with UC bundle and it's shipped with IOS-XE 17.4.1 by default.
i got an on-prem license server which uses smart call home and we're not ready yet for the newer CSLU transport/config in our 4K routers since we're still running 16.12.x code.
my question is, can i 'downgrade' my 4431 to 16.6.x code which our other voice router is currently running in order to register this to on-prem smart license server?
will it lose it's UC feature/license once i downgrade? or will it turn UC license to 'eval' then i have ask TAC to 'convert' or issue my UC license to a smart license?
smart license is such a pain and it delays our network deployment.

You can downgrade, but smart License need to convert to old traditional, you need to get involve License or TAC for that.
instead, i would advice to uplift to version of code where smart License accepted both devices.

hi balaji,
thanks for your feedback! that's what i suspect when i downgrade and need to involve TAC.
what do you mean uplift code? can you expound please.
as you can see here 17.4.x started using CSLU and our on-prem is not ready for it yet. we're still using 'smart' or call-home in our 4K routers.

Since you mentioned you already running OLD Code in the premises, so why not use new Kit with latest version ( you can use this approtuntiy) build new code and test it, and do cut over. and make upgrade old 1.6.6 to latest code. (i mean of uplift this version, before TAC anounce end of Life, may be they did).

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeey, WTF!
Can I see the first seven characters of the serial number of the chassis? Cisco said all routers, switches and WLC manufactured after February 2022 will now be in Install Mode.

hi leo,
FCZ2615
where did you read that? link?
as you can see there's no 'install' mode in the 'show version' output.

Ok, now you've jarred my memory.
All Catalyst 8k router shipped with 17.7.X will ship in "Install Mode".
What’s New? IOS XE 17.7 Routing Release Update
Ship in "install mode" instead of "bundle mode"
In previous releases, images were installed using a .bin file. The router would go through various images before locating the correct one for that device and then boot up. Also, when inserting a new module or chassis, manual intervention was required to get the new switch running on the same version as active switches or modules.
Enhancements Starting with 17.7 With the 17.7 release, Catalyst 8200, 8300, 8500, and 8500L will ship in 'install mode,' which enables a faster boot time, image auto-upgrade, increased flexibility, and improved performance.

Well, start with the basic. Is the serial number of the router in the correct Service Contract.
If it is, contact the License Team and ask them to send a PAK with UC enabled.
Only then do you downgrade the firmware of the router.
