Hello GS,

I am facing EIGRP neibor peer restarted error logs on my backbone switch and its getting down after every 4 hrs.

Would highly appreciate any help in solving this issue !

All my  network is severely being impacted due to this EIGRP neibour error.

Please find the logs below:-

Device is 6509 Backbone switch at location B  ( Loc B is connected----> to LocA backbone  switch ----> LOC A router - ATM & MPLS)

Loc A is Connected to LOC C,D,E..etc with the same links and they are not impacted.

Hello Karim,

you are probably facing a bridging loop:

Dec 30 18:57:58: %STANDBY-3-DUPADDR: Duplicate address 10.5.120.2 on Vlan120, sourced by 0000.0c07.ac78

the failure of IP routing protocols and messages of duplicated addresses in HSRP are symptoms of underlying layer 2 problems.

You need to analyze STP and log on all devices. Be aware that also a malfunctioning or misconfigured access layer switch can be the root cause of this kind of problems.

I would suggest to verify who is the root bridge for each defined vlan, there are chances that for some specific vlan the root bridge is a poor access layer switch.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hello Giuseppe ,

How do you want me proceed for the Duplicate address issue?

Do you mean that EIGRP neighbor change erros are coming due to this STP loop?

Can you post me the commands to solve this issue.

Highly appreicate for your  help!

Hello All,

I am still gettting the below erros on my backbone switch:

I observe tha mac-address as virutal IP of respective vlan .

But still I am unable to resolve the issue, i tried changing HSRP ip from 10.5.107.2 to 10.5.107.4 , but its still same.

Appreciate your response.

Hello Karim,

As Giuseppe noted, this error could be that you have spanning tree loop in your network and the HSRP hellos are going from your device to another and back to one of your redundant devices. It is hard to tell without seen a network diagram.

Can you provide a diagram of your network?

Reza

Hello Karim,

as I wrote you need to investigate STP status in your network.

Starting from distribution or core switches you should use:

show spanning-tree summary

for each vlan listed in the previous show you can see details using

sh spanning-tree vlan vlan#

Verify the root bridge id for each vlan. It should be one of core/distribution switches, if not this can be a problem.

(I've given you examples of commands for IOS based switches. catos uses show spantree vlan#)

a message like "this switch is the root bridge" appears for vlans where local node is the root and cost to root bridge is 0.

As I've noted we had similar issues and the cause was a wrong configuration that caused an access layer switch to be root bridge for a specific vlan. In other cases it was a malfunctioning access layer switch.

Try to reach by telnet each access layer switch.

the log can be examined using

sh log

search for spanning-tree messages if present they are a lot one for each vlan/STP instance.

HSRP and routing protocols are like user traffic in this case and the error events are symptoms, changing the VIP address is not a solution as you have seen.

Also you should look for possible CDP native vlan mismatch that can join two vlans on access ports (no trunking).

However, in your case the problem affects multiple vlans so the cause should be one of the previously mentioned (wrong root bridge or malfunctioning device).

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Take a look at the neighbors logs also.

Do you have bandwidth configured on your vlan interfaces? Eigrp uses 50 % bandwidth by default.

Show us you sample interface configuration and router eigrp configuration please.
