i think this command is for cisco 7000 and 7500 series router. the erase command is not accepted in this 3600series router.

Two Solution.
A I m not sure as i am off from those stuffs long back check wheter u have any delete command available at rommon> prompt by hitting ? mark if so try deleting the IOS in the flash.
B there's a switch/operator provided with xmodem command try to use the "r" option which will put u in exec/prev mode then erase the IOS in the flash then do XMODEM withour r switch.
#####
xmodem [filename]?Establishes an Xmodem connection between the console and the router. The optional argument filename specifies the source file containing the Cisco IOS image.
Other options include the following:
c?Use cyclic redundancy check (CRC-16).
y?Use Ymodem transfer protocol.
r?Copy the image to dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) for launch.
x?Do not launch image on completion of download.

Hi ,
Follow the below steps for IOS upgradation...
1. Try to load the image in RAM using
xmodem -r image name.bin.
IOS is loaded in RAM and router boots..
2.Erase the flash using "erase flash" in privileged mode.
IMP: don't reload the router at this moment.
3. load the image in flash using "copy tftp flash" command.
4. Reload the router which boots using new image stored in flash.
The image stored in RAM will go off automatically after reloading the router...
IMP:check the configuration register value before reloading the router. It must be 0x2102.
All the best ..
cheers :)
