Ethernet over GRE

Hi All

Can anyone tell me the user cases for Ethernet over GRE, what do people use it for normally? would it to be to extend vlans etc? if so why would you use this over L2TP etc?

Also, what would the basic configuration of this look like ?

EoGRE more interoperable an easier to deploy across mixed-vendor. GRE is widely supported by nearly all routers/firewalls.
