How do I get my next hop ip address from my provider on a home network?

I have an old 871W cisco router I want to hook up to the internet.  My ISP is not willing to share the ip address and I can't get into my modem to see what that ip address and subnet are. Have I reached a dead end?

Hi

Is your connection to your isp using a standard dhcp or pppoe connection. In both cases, you should get the default route automatically.

Is your modem a bridge or router? If router, then just plug your router to this modem and you should get an ip with the default route (internal subnet) and then you'll be able to reach internet.

Thanks
Francesco

Hello,

what is the actual problem ? That you don't get an IP address ? Is your 871W connected to an ISP modem, or directly connected to the incoming Internet connection ?
