Dear Friend,
In MPLS, a No of customers might be terminating on same PE router & running BGP with ISP backbone. These customers may be using same private IP address within their organisations. To make each customers IP add unique, a 64bit address is added to 32 bit existing IP address. This combination is called route-distinguisher & is 96bit in length.
Route-target is again a 64bit identifier that uniquely identifies each customer VPN.
