Hi all,
I am facing a problem with my cisco 881 router. The router is configured and line is up between ISP , and also can use internet from internal users.
But when i checked on the router, every 10 secs i found that error messages.
%PQII_PRO_FE-5-LATECOLL: PQII_PRO/FE(4), Late collision
The internet goes down often and comes up only when the router is restarted.
this is my IOS version.

I used IP address for WAN port fe4 and for internal, use vlan 1 with public ip range.
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol

FastEthernet1 unassigned YES unset down down
FastEthernet2 unassigned YES unset up up
FastEthernet3 unassigned YES unset down down
FastEthernet4 x.x.x.x YES NVRAM up up
Vlan1 x.x.x.x YES NVRAM up up
When I look at the Sh interface fastethernet4 there has so many output errors , and I configure very simple and just use default route.
Please suggest me what should I do to solve this problem .
Thanks a lot

Hi,
Can you check duplex setting on fastethernet4 and the other end of device. i mean also check duplex setting on device connected
to Fa4 interface. Both end should have identical duplex setting

Hi Mahesh,
The fastethernet4 of router is connected to a modem. I tried changing the duplex setting in the router. When I configure fa4 to full duplex the entire internet is getting disconnected. The line protocol is becoming down. Even from inside the router I am not getting internet. When the duplex is changed to half duplex, the internet is coming up but the error message is popping up. When it is changed to duplex auto, in the sh interface fa4, it is showing as half duplex. Also when we set the value to duplex half or auto, the problem I mentioned earlier occurs.

Alex

The late collisions are a classic symptom of a duplex mismatch. The duplex mismatch happens frequently when one device does not negotiate duplex and results in the other device operating in half duplex. I would have thought that setting your interface to full duplex would have fixed the problem. But you say that it brings the link down. My advice would be to talk to whoever supplied the modem and ask them to help you get a setting that works.

HI,
We are experiencing exactly the same problem. It seems that it's not the modem which is to blame but the Cisco 881 router.
We use 2 different type of routers to connect our customers to BT. Cisco 1841 which works perfectly fine and Cisco 881. The requirement is that the router needs to be set to 10Meg and Full duplex. When we set it up the interface comes up/up, however nothing is added to the routing table.
This only happens on Cisco 881. cisco 1841/1941 do not have this problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Michal

You posted in a thread about a problem with late collision. But you do not describe a problem that involves late collision. Your problem seems to be that nothing is added to the routing table. Is my understanding correct?
Have you configured an IP address on the interface? Have you configured the interface for DHCP? Perhaps you could post the configuration?

HI Richard,
Sorry about not being too clear on what the problem was. Basically we experienced exactly the same problem as per the original post.
We have BT Hatteras box which is hard set to duplex full and speed 10 and we want to connect Cisco 881 to it. When we have set the 881 to speed 10 and duplex full on the WAN interface then the circuit would not come, however "show ip interface brief" would indicate that the WAN interface as being UP/UP. Routing table in this case was empty.
When we have changed Cisco 881 to duplex auto and speed 10 then we were able to ping across the link however with the huge amount of late collisions due to duplex mismatch on both ends.
Hope that this makes sense.
At the end we managed to upgrade the IOS to the latest version which solved the problem.
Best regards,
Michal

Hi Michal
I have a similar issue. Could you tell me what version of IOS you upgraded to.
Kind regards,
Phil
