Layer 2 VPN over ipv4 that would allow both Ipv4 and IPv6 connectivity

Hi,

I need to connect two sites over IPv4 and create Layer 2 connectivity between them.

The traffic between the sites would be both IPv4 and IPv6.

Is there any configuration guide available covering this use case?

Thank you in advance.

Hello @kasper123 ,

for a point to point L2 service between two sites over an IPv4 internetwork the suggestion is to use L2TPv3.

Hope to help

Hi Giuseppe,

Are there any special considerations for running IPv6 over the VPN? Will ND work over the VPN?

Regards.

Hello @kasper123 ,

being a L2 service carrying multicast ethernet frames used by IPv6 ND should not be an issue.

You will have a customer facing interface that is the attachement point for the L2 service then the L2 frames are tunneled over IPv4 between two endpoints on routers using a L2TPv3 tunnel.

for these endpoints is recommended to use loopbacks that must be advertised on the underlying IPv4 internetwork.

Alternatively the LAN interface to the IPv4 internetwork can be used.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
