Hello, First post here and I did do a search, but didnt come up with much.
I have two GRE tunnels across 2 seperate WAN links. One link is 45 Mbps and the other link is 6Mpbs. I was thinking the Variance command would be the choice here(well only choice) since we are running EIGRP.
Below are the (Edited)configs on the spokes
First tunnel
INTERFACE TUNNEL 10500
DESCRIPTION 45Mbps
DAMPENING
BANDWIDTH 45000
IP ADDRESS X.X.X.X
TUNNEL SOURCE X.X.X.30
TUNNEL MODE IPSECIPV4
TUNNEL DESTINATION X.X.X.29
SERVICE POLICY OUTPUT SHAPING-45000
Second Tunnel
INTERFACE TUNNEL 10501
DESCRIPTION 6Mbps
DAMPENING
BANDWIDTH 6312
IP ADDRESS X.X.X.X.
TUNNEL SOURCE SERIAL 0/0/0
TUNNEL DESTINATION X.X.X.46
SERVICE POLICY OUTPUT SHAPING-6312
This is my first project for my new job, so I obviously want to get it right. If I am missing some critical information or you need clarification on something, please do not hesitate to request it.
Thanks in advance

Ok, I have used a different browser and was able to paste in my TOPO table. I will post the running config in the next reply.

Hello Micheal,
If you do a sh ip route eigrp at present their should be only on path for all routes in the rib table.
Now when you apply a variance value this will install another path into the rib, meaning you will then have two paths showing in the routing table.
The variance calculation can be done by the metric extracted from the Eigrp topology table:
P 10.170.9.24/30, 1 successors, FD is 1345280
via 10.170.2.50 (1345280/65280), Tunnel10500, serno 72548
via 10.170.2.56 (1688576/65280), Tunnel10501, serno 72568
1345280/1688576 =1.25 round out the highest value = variance 2
@Richard/Joseph
I think what I am trying to get at, is with or without the variance, CEF will default to forward via per destination anyway. I agree deterministically if the variance is applied and a new path is now availble, another scr/dst could use this new path, BUT wouldnt this other scr/dst always use that same path, and not load share between the two without per-packet...correct???
(by the way in my testing i used a variance of 9)

Paul,
Ok thanks. It looked like I would not be able to run the variance command as I was looking at the routing table and only seeing one path, whereas I should have been looking at the Topology table as Richard suggested.
Based on the output of the TOPO table and my running config, do you think a variance of 2 will achieve my goal? I did set this up on a much smaller scale in GNS3 and immediately saw the second path(Tunnel 10501) populate the routing table.
02-18-2013 09:04 AM
Hello Michael
That is normal, as eigrp will only select the best path and install it on the routing table, once you apply the variance the secondary will also get installed.

Thanks for the additional information. Based on the EIGRP topology information you posted I believe that you could run EIGRP with variance of 2 and achieve load sharing.
I do find some things in your topology table that surprise and puzzle me. With the difference in bandwidth between 45000 and 6312 I expected to see a pretty large difference between paths in the topology table which would have required a quite large variance (and which I thought might make it difficult to satisfy the feasible successor condition). But for most of the routes the difference between paths is pretty small.
And for some of the routes there is no difference between the two paths - which was a real surprise.
P 215.65.139.146/32, 2 successors, FD is 2987264
via 10.170.2.50 (2987264/1707264), Tunnel10500
via 10.170.2.56 (2987264/1707264), Tunnel10501
Good luck with getting this implemented. From what we see here it looks like it should work ok.

It seems to me that you and I have some different concepts about load sharing or perhaps have a difference in terminology about load sharing. So let me try to clarify what I am trying to say and what I think it means.
To me load sharing means that some traffic will use one path and some traffic will use the other path. If a second path to a destination is present in the routing table (and if there are multiple flows) then load sharing should take place. With EIGRP variance that load sharing should be roughly proportional to the capacity of the different links. To use the example of your test I believe that traffic from 1.1.1.1 to 2.2.2.2 will take one of the paths and that traffic from 1.1.1.6 to 2.2.2.6 might take the second path. And to me that is load sharing that is working.
It seems that from your perspective that it is only load sharing if traffic between a source destination pair takes both paths (where you said "BUT wouldnt this other scr/dst always use that same path, and not load share between the two without per-packet...correct???") If that is how you are using the terminology then it would be true that you only get load sharing with per packet.

Paul, Richard and Joseph,
Thank you for helping me out on this. I proposed Load balancing using the Variance command, but of course the requirements have changed and they are not yet finalized, so I dont know which way we will be going yet lol Thanks again for everyones help, everyones input was very helpful, not only for my specific requirement, but the general discussion which too place.

Of course they did - laugh.
In any case, just wanted to re-emphasis except for packet-by-packet, other load balancing is generally per flow. Over time, if you have a good mix of flows, links will average out as expected, but short term results can be very much different from what's desired. For example, a high volume flow could be directed to your 6 Mbps path even if that path is already saturated and/or the 45 Mbps has no active flows.
This is the principle reason I mentioned PfR's PIRO, as it can dynamically load balance flows.
