msdp

Hi,

Could anyone explain the difference between "ip msdp redistribute" and "p msdp sa-filter out" commands? As per

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_2/ip/configuration/guide/1cfmsdp_ps1835_TSD_Products_Configuration_Guide_Chapter.html, description looks same. Also, Is MP-BGP is mandatory for MSDP to work? It would be great if someone posts a link which has basic examples of this feature.

Thanks,

Balajee

Hello Balajee,

MPBGP is not mandatory.

MSDP depends heavily on BGP or MBGP for interdomain operation. We recommend that you run MSDP in RPs in your domain that are RPs for sources sending to global groups to be announced to the internet.

Example: ip msdp peer x.x.x.x connect-source Loopback0 remote-as 65001

Here when the RP is in another domain(different AS) which is not your local AS, then however you will get connected to the domain via the the only EGP called as BGP.

Thanks

Hello Balajee,

the difference between ip msdp redistribute and ip msdp sa-filter out should be the following:

the second command like a route-map applied outbound to a BGP peer applies to all the possible SA messages that can be sent to the neighbor including both the locally learned sources and those SA messages coming from a different ;MSDP peer.

The first command provides filtering options for locally learned sources only

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios-xml/ios/ipmulti/command/imc_i2.html#wp2930691609

note the following that explains this

>>When the                  ip                  msdp                  redistribute command is entered  without any keywords or arguments, the router will still forward SA  messages from other MSDP peers in the normal fashion; it will just not  originate any SA messages for local sources.

So they are slightly different

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Thanks Giuseppe for the explanation.
