Yes, it is possible for a Host to act as Source and Receiver and the router / Layer 3 switch is not configured for PIM BIDIR but for PIM ASM (aka Sparse mode). In that case the device is acting as First-Hop Router (FHR) and Last-Hop Router (LHR).

What is the issue that you are facing?

Hello @gavinhans ,

yes it can work because a source based tree is built for each (S,G) pair and packets to the RP are sent using the register process and then a source based tree that can go via the RP or not depending on topology and the current set of receivers.

PIM BiDir is really needed when the number of sources is high for many to many multicast applications because it allows to save on router resources (memory)  by allowing PIM DR routers to send traffic to the RP .

in practice with PIM BiDir the switch to the source based tree is not needed and all the traffic in both directions goes via the Shared Tree rooted ath the RP.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
