Need suitable replacement for 7204VXR border router

We have a 7204VXR router acting as our border router doing two BGP sessions with our upstream provider (getting default route for Internet, small routing table for Internet2, advertising /21 subnet). We are looking for a replacement  that will support up to 10GE speeds. What is the best option for this? From the Cisco site, it looks like we should be looking at the ASR1002, is this correct?

Hi spfister336, The direct replacement for the Cisco 7200 series is the ASR series that you looked into here is a link on the EOL notice for the 7200 series

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/7200-series-routers/end_of_life_c51-681414.html

as for the exact model here is a comparison chart for the ASR Series.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/routers/asr-1000-series-aggregation-services-routers/models-comparison.html

as you mentioned the ASR 1002 support 10GE as few other models please refer to them for the exact model that would suit your requirement.

Have you find the best option for this? If your budget permits, go with the ASR because the Cisco 7200 are already end of life.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thanks!

Or the ASR 1001-X.

Or the ASR 1001-X.

Joe,

I can't believe the two Cisco SALES contractor (posts below) doesn't even know what they are selling.  ROFL!

I will disagree with the posts/recommendation by the two Cisco SALES people below.  They've just provided you with the WRONG INFORMATION & recommendation.

I will agree with what Joseph has to say.  ASR 1001-X is fully capable of supporting of up to 10 Gbps input AND output traffic (no encryption).

If you plan to go up to 20 Gbps in the future, then consider looking at the ASR 1002-X.
