Private or Public BGP AS on dedicated point to point leased line

Hi,

We run Public BGP AS on our connection with ISP from where we access the internet.

Now we added a new separate dedicated 2mb circuit to our trading partner which is provisioned by ISP. We want to run BGP with our partner over that new circuit on which we will exchange some private routes as well as public.

Can we run private BGP AS with our trade partner or should it be our Public BGP AS ? Can you please advise which one and why ?

You can use any. I prefer public.

Certainly you might do either public or private AS with your partner. Choosing which one would depend on some things that we do not yet know. For example would the router which forwards traffic to your partner be the same router that does BGP with your ISP? If it is the same router then it should use the same BGP AS (which would be the public AS). It might also depend on how you want to treat this partner. Do you want to integrate them, their traffic and their address space into your public Internet traffic? If so then use public AS with them. Do you want to maintain some separation of their traffic and their address space from your public Internet then use private AS.

It is frequently helpful to begin that process by reviewing the existing network and how it works, and by clarifying what is the real objective of the new design. Once these are clarified it is usually easier to identify which alternative is most attractive and will involve acceptable tradeoffs. Thank you for marking this question as solved.
