QoS - Max Reserved Bandwidth for 100Mbps WAN Interface

Hi guys,

would it be ok to change the default max reserved band for a WAN interface which has up to 100Mbps guaranteed bandwidth?

The router is doing NAT, basic firewalling, site2site vpn (1xTunnel), QoS for VPN traffic and it has only a default route to the ISP. The ISP provides a 100Mbps connection.

The question is: does it make sense to leave the default max reserverd band on the WAN interface in this scenario, isnt't too much bandwidth left for the overhead traffic or can it be changed to 85/90 without damaging the control traffic?

Does it make sense to leave 25Mb for the overhead traffic?

As this bandwidth is available to your other classes, unless it's being completely used, how would leaving it as the default be adverse to your other traffic?  If there's a reason why it would be adverse, then you'll want to adjust.

Hello,

BW percentages that total 100%.including the class class-deafult can be configured with CBWFQ

Do you think 75mb is enough for your defined classes? ( default 75% ma reserverd BW)

The scheduler ensures that each queue receives  % of bw defined in its class, and If some queues do not need their bw for a short period, then this is spread accross the other classes.

thanks for the reply.

75Mb would be ok.

But I was wondering if the max reserved band in my scenario could be changed and benefit from another 10/15Mb. I think 25Mb is quite a lot for the overhead traffic (I'm not using routing protocols).

so what's left? probably L2 traffic...

Does it make sense to leave 25Mb for the overhead traffic?

As CBWFQ classes generally can use unused bandwidths from other classes, class bandwidth allocations are really only important when multiple classes are competing for limited bandwidth and you want to provide some classes of traffic more of the constrained bandwidth than other classes.

Whether an insufficient allocation for control traffic will be damaging, depends on the service requirements of that particular control traffic.

Generally as control traffic doesn't use much bandwidth, but might be adversely impacted by insufficient bandwidth, it's "safer" to over allocate for it, which guarantees it bandwidth when it needs it, yet other traffic can use the bandwidth allocated to its class when it's not using it.

In other words, will there be real benefit to change max reserve?  (Often there's not.)
