Qos when traffic is going through a DMVPN over MPLS tunnel

Hi Team,

I have a requirement where my voice traffic  needs to be prioritized end to end as we have multiple sites connected over DMVPN I have a question when the traffic is marked at the source will that marking be honoured even through DMVPN over MPLS WAN considering I have this contract with Service provider. As we are using DMVPN will the QOS DSCP values be visible even in the  underlying MPLS transport layer for the service provider to honour them. Please clarify

dganta,

By default, DSCP value is copied over to the outer IP header with GRE encapsulation, so the header visible to your ISP will have the relevant QoS value preserved. The treatment of packet with this value will depend purely on your ISP's QoS policy. If they gave you pre-defined values that they will honour, then you should use these values to make sure your packets get desired treatment in the ISP network.

As Sergey notes, it's up to your MPLS vendor to process DSCP markings. I.e. your contract with them. Most MPLS vendors can provide some form of QoS support (often a "menu" of QoS choices), sometimes for free, sometimes for an additional charge. NB: often what QoS they can provide is a subset of what your router can do.

BTW, although your MPLS vendor might provide different QoS treatment within their MPLS cloud, remember you need to insure your markings conform to what they expect as your traffic enters their MPLS cloud (again, Sergey is correct, normally IP ToS markings are copied to the encapsulated packet's ToS) and you often also need to insure your traffic gets whatever QoS treatment it needs as it egresses from your network to the MPLS cloud.
