Route Reflector Placement Best Practice

Where is it documented on best practices on where to put RRs? Suppose I have:

                  

The RR will advertise to the 2 below. But because ebgp learned routes are advertised to ibgp neighbors, what rules dictate if R2 is NOT the RR and R4 could be? Is there a best practice on this? R4 would still learn R2's routes, and then R4 could be configured as the RR with R5 and R6 as clients. R3 would also learn the ebgp routes from R2 as well, but everything that I've ever researched looks like the preferred method is to put the RR on the edge.

Hi John,

you are right..! Same goes for me, as far as i read abt bgp and RR's they always put the RR at the edge. i guess the reason behind it is a design factor to reduce the overhead:

RR in the middle:

eBGP <-> eBGP/iBGP <-> iBGP/RR <-> Clients

by putting RR at the Edge:

eBGP <-> eBGP/RR <-> Clients

we'll have a shorter chain of advertisement.

otherwise, all other methods u mention would work flawless.
