Route tag size

Hi All,

I have a doubt regarding the route tag size used by different routing protocols. As per I know EIGRP, OSPF & BGP use 32 bit tags but the below document by cisco says RIP V2 uses a 16-bit tag:

http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Routing_Information_Protocol

Can somebody please clarify if the route tag size is same for all routing protocols or is it different?

Thanks a lot in advance

Hello Pradeep,

route tag size is not the same for all protocols as you noted.

RIPV2 and may be ISIS should have a 16 bit route tag field, other protocols have a 32 bit route tag field as you have noted

This has to be taken in account in multi protocols scenarios.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
