SUP720 BGP process memory usage

Dear all,

We are running IOS 15.1(2)SY7 on a 6500 with SUP730-3BXL. We are getting full routing table from two BGP peers, and we noticed a strange behavior in memory usage by "BGP router" process.

Since we have only 20MB of RAM available, we decided to filter out /24s on both peers by applying an inbound route-map.

"sh ip route summary" confirmed that the filter is working right (installed prefixes dropped from ~700k to ~300k), but memory usage of "BGP router" process didn't change:

Router#sh proc mem sort
Processor Pool Total: 881258496 Used: 862203792 Free: 19054704
I/O Pool Total: 67108864 Used: 21605592 Free: 45503272

PID TTY Allocated Freed Holding Getbufs Retbufs Process
45 0 687443952 595980712 583092684 0 0 BGP Router

[.....]

bgp soft reconfiguration is not enabled. Any ideas? Thank you!

Why do you take a full routing table ? just take a summarize routing table

At the moment we absolutely need full routing table. I can't explain why filtering out prefixes doesn't change memory usage.
