Using third-party GBIC's

I have came across some third-party ws-g5483's that I was thinking of using. But when I go to plug them in, nothing seems to happen. I have tried them in ws-c3548-xl-en and also a ws-c3524-pwr-xl-en with the same results. I know on the newer switches you can do the serviice unsupported-transceiver command but is there anything I can do to get these to work with older switches?

Not all third-party GBICs are supported.

Is there a command that will work with these older switches?

Or do you know what switch would support a broader range of 3rd party GBIC's?

Nope.  I'll explain shortly.

No.

The reason why there are "some" third-party GBICs that'll work is because Cisco doesn't manufacturer them.  These GBICs are given to a number of manufacturers.  During those early days, Cisco inserts a simple EEPROM code to allow the GBIC to work and some suppliers know what this is so they also insert this code into their chips.

Early generations of Finnisar-branded GBICs, for example, do work on Cisco switches.

That makes sense. The only thing that throws me off is that it actually has the WS-G5483 part number on the unit itself. The manufacturer is Agilestar. The instructions actually have pictures showing the device going into a Cisco switch. I am now confused lol.

Hi,

Try Transition Networks

They work well with cisco devices without any errors
