My project requires that I use a RSP720-3C-10GE in a CISCO7604 . Due to stock shortages I cannot get the RSP720-3C-10GE. Can I use a VS-S720-10G-3C in the CISCO7604 ? Are there any major differences between the VS-S720-10G-3C and RSP720-3C-10GE ?

Hi Gary,
Please see Table 2 of the following document. You will require 12.2(33)SXH or later to use the VS-S720-10G-3C in a 7604.
In regards to the differences between the two supervisors, hopefully someone else can help you out with this information. From what I understand they should both be very similair however the size of the TCAMs are different. Can anyone else confirm this?
Cheers,
Conor

Thanks Conor .. that was very helpful. In essence I sold a RSP720-3C-10GE which is unavailable and I wanted to offer the VS-S720-10G-3C as an alternate and wanted to find out if there is any significant differences other than IOS ? Steven Mazabow (steven@iptrading.com.au)

Hi Steven,
I've found the following document which has a bit more information.
"The Cisco 7600 RSP 720 uses the same high-performance 720-Gbps crossbar switch fabric as that used by the Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720 and combines it with a new, revised, and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC)-based forwarding engine."

Looking through a few other forums, there doesn't seem to be many major differences between them. Are there any experts here who could provide more info on this please?
Cheers,
Conor

Hello Conor, Gary,
RSP 720 mounts an MSFC4, sup 720 uses MSFC3.
RSP 720 is more router oriented for roles like PE or aggregation router.
VS 720 is more lan switch oriented and allows to build a VSS if using all linecards of type 67xx.
So all depends from what the device has to do. If it has to handle full internet BGP routing tables the XL version is mandatory in any case because now an internet table is 300,000 routes.
Hope to help
Giuseppe
