Just a general question how well this might work....
I would like to decrease the cpu load on our edge router. Can we load balance a single WAN link among 2 routers to effectively reduce the cpu load on the main edge router?
Thanks for everyone's input!
If your CPU on the edge router is high, it may not necessarily be the WAN circuit. You would need to look at the different features you are running on your router and figure out which one is causing the high CPU. It also depended on the size of the circuit and also the type of router you are using. Most routers can handle one WAN circuit with no issues. Usually, one circuit can be only terminated in one router and not multiples.
Here is a 'show processes cpu sorted' dump for you. As you can see, there is nothing there that shows anything abnormal. We are running a 100/5 connection that is usually fully utilized.
The only pure router i know of that supports something like you ask is the 1941 wireless carriers.
do you have things like NAT, or long access lists, policy based routing running ?
