"ip domain name" specifies the domain name of the cisco device itself. One of the things this is used for is security certificate generation for IPSEC, SSH or HTTPS access. The certificate will be generated using the entries you put in for hostname and domain name.

so would i use the the same dns name for dhcp ?

DNS you need to have FQDN, to resolve the Internet naming.

if the domain name is FQDN, you can do that.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hello,

one thing you need the domain name for is to generate an RSA key for SSH. The RSA key will be the hostname followed by the configured domain name:

Switch(config)#hostname Switch1

Switch1(config)#ip domain-name mydomain.com

Switch1(config)# crypto key generate rsa
The name for the keys will be: Switch1.mydomain.com
