how do I determine which version of WIC I have? Not type, but verion. I'm told that version 1 WIC will not work in a 2800 series router.

Its written in the card (front) else in its board. See sample for WIC 1B-S/T-V3, see the V3 in the front http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps274/products_data_sheet09186a0080091b87.html

Use the command 'show diag' and look under the WIC slot and it would show you the type of WIC you have. You might see something like WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 or WIC-1DSU-T1 and the first one is version 2 as indicated by V2 in the part #.

Oh yes, Sundar is right. If the WIC is already installed even if it is not compatible you can use the sh diag :)
