Wrong connection can damage router

In the router "Cabling and Installation" guide, it says this:

"Always connect the Ethernet cable to an Ethernet port on the router. Accidentally connecting the cable to the wrong port can damage your

router."

I googled but came up blank.  Just curious, what's the details on the damage caused and how?

The worst would be that the port may not work. However, I don;t think it would be the case always.

Lot of people have connected console cable to ethernet & ethernet to console port by mistake. That doesn't cause any damage always, but, doesn't achieve any objective. Ethernet cable would work with ethernet port & console cable will work with console port only.
