Yes, this interface is used for management and updates(global correlation, auto signature updates, etc).The production traffic is passed from firewall to IPS module internally.

We have an IPS ASA-SSM-20, the license is expired and we 've bought a Smartnet contract for the device.I would like to know how to update the license.We tried to do it from ASDM, and chose the option to update from cisco.com.we got the following error.internal error. Failed to send license request. - 4: Unable to tunnel thourgh proxy. Proxy returns "HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden
How to solve this problem or how to do when using the other option, how to get the license file.
Solution:
It appears your AIP-SSM20 is configured to use an http proxy to connect to the Internet. If you can allow the management IP
address of the AIP-SSM20 in your web proxy this may solve your problem.
If that isn't the issue, you can always apply a license manually. Get your license file here:
https://tools.cisco.com/SWIFT/LicensingUI/Home
and apply it via the ASDM or the CLI
