Introduction

What is ASDM?

ASDM stands for Adaptive Security Device Manager. It is a simple, GUI-Based Firewall Appliance Management software. Network administrators can quickly configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Cisco firewall appliances and firewall service modules with the help of this user-friendly application.

Prequisite

  • GNS3
  • Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance Software Version 8.0(2)
  • Cisco Adaptive Security Device Manager Version 6.0(2)
  • Java 1.6.0_20

Core Issue

ASDM Versions 6.0 to 6.1(3) do not support Java RE SE 6 Update 7 (JRE 1.6.0_7) or later. ASDM 6.1.5 resolves this issue.

The Configuration > Remote Access VPN > Secure Desktop Manager menu fails to display the options other than Setup if JRE 6 Update 7 is installed.

The following message appears after starting the ASDM Versions 6.0 to 6.1(3) launcher with JRE 6 Update 10:

ASDM cannot be loaded. Unconnected sockets not implemented.

Resolution

To fix the problem,

1) Remove any JRE updates later than 6.

2) Restart the computer.

3) Go to the Java Archive page, choose 6 Update 6 next to "JDK/JRE - 6," and click Go.

4) Click Download JRE on the next page and proceed with the installation.
