Connecting a modem to the console port of a PIX Firewall in order to dial into the PIX should be avoided since that phone connection will be available for everyone to connect to the PIX and have a console connection.
The console port of a PIX Firewall is a RS232 9-PIN (DCE).
Complete these steps to connect a modem to the console port:
Connect a PC to your modem with your HyperTerminal settings configured for 9600 baud, no parity, 8 databits, and 1 stopbit. Once configured, connect the serial port of your PC to the DB-25 (DCE) connection of the modem.
2. Take a 9-PIN to DB-25 conversion cable and connect it to the console port of the PIX Firewall. If you can find a 9-PIN to DB-25 NULL MODEM cable then use it.
3. Take a DB-25 to DB-25 NULL MODEM adapter and connect it between the modem and the PIX. This is needed because the console port of the PIX is a data communications
equipment (DCE) and the modem is a DCE. A DCE cannot talk to another DCE without a NULL MODEM pinout. This special pinout makes one of the DCEs appear as a data
terminal equipment (DTE) to the remote.
4. Verify that your cables are connected properly and secured.
5. Verify that your modem is powered up and dial tone is available for the modem.
6. Dial into the modem to get into the console of the PIX Firewall.
Note: Set the modem to auto answer. There is no configuration required on the PIX.
